Dendritic cell (DC) is a kind of professional APC originating from hematopoietic stem cell. Researches have found that DC can efficiently ingest, process and present antigen to other immune cells. Immature DCs have strong migration ability while mature DCs effectively activate naive T cell and induce immune responses timely and moderately. This article reviews the origin, differentiation, characteristics and immunomodulatory capabilities of DC, as well as important current development in the research of DC in tumor treatment and inhibition of inflammatory disease such as atherosclerosis and cytomegalovirus infection.
