 Adjuvants can increase the immune response to influenza vaccines. Besides the classic aluminum adjuvant, several new adjuvants , including MF59 and AS03, have been licensed for human use. They have shown improved efficacy for cell-mediated response, and also have a humoral immunity profile similar to aluminum. This article outlines the composition, mode of action and clinical efficacy of new generation influenza vaccine adjuvants. Thoughts and proposals on further development of adjuvants are also addressed.
